» Diving on ice: what I learned training with Harrogate for dream Leeds tie

The chance to train in goal with the League Two side was too good to miss as excitement builds for Elland Road trip

“Will Unwin

“Patrick Bamford! Joël Piroe! Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink!” are screamed at me as shots are thrashed towards the net, testing my reflexes. Somehow I have become the fourth goalkeeper at one of Harrogate Town’s final training sessions before facing the Championship leaders, Leeds, in the third round of the FA Cup, one of the most significant games in the club’s 106-year existence.

» Olivia Rabjohn eyes Manchester United scalp and sisterly bragging rights

An injured Evie Rabjohn will watch on as her United team face sister Olivia’s West Brom in FA Cup fourth round

The West Brom midfielder Olivia Rabjohn and her sister Evie Rabjohn, a defender for Manchester United, had a feeling as soon as they woke up on the morning of the fourth-round draw for the FA Cup: their teams were destined to meet.

Olivia was out when the draw took place, but Evie was on hand to FaceTime and fill her in. The meeting of the two sides on Saturday, though, is somewhat bittersweet. Evie sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury with England Under-19s last July and although her recovery is going well, she is not yet ready to return to the pitch.

» Football Daily | Dyche, Moyes and Everton looking to replace a fixer with a fixer

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

Sean Dyche strikes us as the kind of bloke who always has a bag packed, just in case. We can only hope the now-former Everton manager was logistically prepared for Thursday’s events as the club’s new owners, The Friedkin Group, finally made their presence felt by marching him unceremoniously through the door marked Do One at 4.32pm, the timing not ideal for football’s most teatimely email. It was also little more than three hours until kick-off in Everton’s next match, an FA Cup third-round tie at home to Peterborough. So, after just under two years in charge and two-and-a-half relegation escapes, achieved against a backdrop of near-total financial meltdown, that was it: so long and good luck? As their club statement may as well have said, TFG don’t recall saying good luck.

» Manchester City given encouragement in Marmoush chase and eye Khusanov
  • Frankfurt may consider €60m-plus bid for forward
  • City also preparing £33m bid for Palmeiras’s Vítor Reis

Manchester City are considering testing Eintracht Frankfurt’s resolve to keep their highly rated forward Omar Marmoush with a formal bid while also monitoring the Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov and preparing an offer of €40m (£33m) for Palmeiras’s teenage defender Vitor Reis.

While Frankfurt’s official stance is that Marmoush is not for sale, it is understood the club, currently third in the Bundesliga, may countenance a €60m-plus (£50m-plus) offer for the 25-year-old Egyptian, who has scored 18 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions this season.

» Rodrigo Bentancur told he can return to playing after 12-day concussion protocol
  • Spurs midfielder knocked himself out in EFL Cup semi
  • Will miss three games, including north London derby

Rodrigo Bentancur has been given the all-clear to return to playing after he serves a 12-day concussion protocol. The Tottenham midfielder sparked concern when he collapsed to the turf in his club’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg win over Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Bentancur was taken away on a stretcher after eight minutes of treatment and was assessed in hospital. The neurological tests have revealed nothing more serious than concussion.

» Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal ‘squad limitations’ but new signings not certain
  • Raheem Sterling could return for Man Utd FA Cup tie
  • Arsenal manager: ‘Bringing in bodies doesn’t help at all’

Mikel Arteta has admitted his squad has “certain limitations” but offered no guarantee that Arsenal will bring in reinforcements despite a lack of attacking options at his disposal.

Arteta is expected to rotate his lineup against Manchester United in the FA Cup third round on Sunday as they head into a busy week that features Premier League fixtures against Tottenham and Aston Villa. But with Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri sidelined, he faces a decision on whether to recall Raheem Sterling after injury or stick with the some of the players who started Tuesday’s defeat by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.

» Arne Slot: FA Cup tie with Liverpool is Accrington’s Champions League final
  • Slot warns his players not to take League Two side lightly
  • Federico Chiesa could make rare appearance for hosts

Arne Slot has warned Liverpool’s players they cannot be complacent against Accrington Stanley given they will treat their FA Cup third-round tie at Anfield on Saturday as their “Champions League final”.

The League Two side’s visit to Liverpool will be Slot’s first experience of facing an English lower league side in a competitive game. Eighty-seven places separate Accrington and the Premier League leaders, and a win for John Doolan’s team would go down as one of the great upsets in the competition’s long history.

» FA Cup third round: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Accrington face the ultimate test, long throws await Spurs and there’s a potential blockbuster in north London

“We’re aware we were once mentioned in a milk advert,” reads the bio on Accrington Stanley’s X page. “We hear ‘Who are they?’ and ‘Exactly’ a lot.” Don’t be misled by the weary tone regarding their mention in the famous 1989 Milk Marketing Board advertisement, for which the club received £10,000. The connection has always been embraced and never more so than in the buildup to their third round visit to Liverpool, the Premier League leaders. As the Accrington captain, Seamus Conneely, said: “We’ve made it to third and fourth rounds before, we’ve had League Cup runs and played in some great stadiums, but we’ve finally got that big one. Liverpool is going to top it all.” Accrington have sold their entire 4,700-ticket allocation and the tie is of huge significance to the striker Josh Woods, a boyhood Liverpool fan whose reaction to the draw went viral and prompted a reply from Ibrahima Konaté. Liam Coyle is another Red who started out in Liverpool’s academy, while the management team of John Doolan and Ged Brannan are also from Liverpool. This is an FA Cup moment to cherish. Andy Hunter

Major League Soccer has apologised after saying Celtic’s Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi had signed for Atlanta United when in fact it was his compatriot Cayman Togashi who had joined the club.

» Graham Potter’s task is to put human heart back in West Ham’s gormless machine | Jonathan Liew

After Hollywood farce of Chelsea and two years out of game, rags-to-riches manager has seized chance to join ‘family club’

Remember Angrygate? For a few surreal days in February 2023, pretty much the entire talking apparatus of English football was engaged – as is its habit – in a fevered, earnest and yet entirely fatuous debate about whether Graham Potter was angry enough to be the Chelsea manager.

Under an increasingly persistent line of questioning, Potter coped pretty well. He firmly pointed out that you do not go from the ninth tier to one of the biggest clubs in the world without a certain ruthless streak. He subtly rebuked the hypocrisy of the media for demanding greater touchline theatrics from Premier League managers and then pontificating about the culture of abuse towards grassroots referees. So subtly, in fact, that the media blissfully ignored that bit.

» Men’s transfer window January 2025: all deals from Europe’s top five leagues

All the latest Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A deals and a club-by-club guide

After financial fair play concerns limited spending last January, this could be a busier window for Europe’s biggest clubs. In the Premier League, Liverpool are flying high but are yet to secure new contracts for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Trent Alexander-Arnold – with all three now able to speak to other clubs about pre-contract agreements.

Behind them, Arsenal are weighing up whether to boost their attacking options, and Manchester City could recruit a new midfielder with Rodri’s absence derailing their title hopes. Further down the table, Manchester United may need to clear players out before Ruben Amorim can make signings, but Ange Postecoglou is planning to bolster his underachieving Tottenham squad.

» Bellingham and Rodrygo sink Mallorca as Real Madrid reach Super Cup final
  • Real Madrid 3-0 Mallorca
  • Spanish champions set to face rivals Barcelona in Jeddah

Second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo helped Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over Mallorca in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals and set up a showdown with Barcelona in Jeddah.

Bellingham broke the deadlock after the hour mark with a low drive following an excellent team move. Martin Valjent’s own goal doubled the lead in stoppage time, the Mallorca defender accidentally stabbing the ball past Dominik Greif in goal as he attempted to cut out a pass from the substitute Brahim Díaz to Kylian Mbappé. Rodrygo then struck from close range to round off the victory, converting a stunning cross into the box by Lucas Vázquez.

» Everton make David Moyes their top target after sacking Sean Dyche
  • Dyche had been in charge of club since January 2023
  • Baines and Coleman take team against Peterborough

Everton’s new owners are expected to offer David Moyes the chance to return to Goodison Park after sacking Sean Dyche hours before the FA Cup tie against Peterborough United. Moyes, who left Everton for Manchester United in 2013, has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

The Scot’s availability, vast experience of the Premier League and of Everton make him an attractive proposition for The Friedkin Group (TFG) as it considers candidates who could secure the club’s top-flight status this season. Its first managerial appointment as Everton owners could happen quickly. Talks with Moyes will advance on Friday.

» ‘A massive draw’: Salford ready for their biggest game at Manchester City

Karl Robinson’s side have won six games in a row and travel to the Etihad with a chance to put themselves on the map

Salford City are in the middle of their finest spell as a Football League club on the pitch as they prepare for the biggest game in their history. The Ammies travel less than five miles on Saturday to face Manchester City in a pivotal spell that could shape their future.

Karl Robinson’s side have won six matches in a row without conceding to thrust them into the League Two automatic promotion spots and have reached the FA Cup third round for the first time. Salford won four promotions in five seasons in the aftermath of the Class of 92’s purchase a decade ago but have plateaued in the fourth tier since 2019. After three mid-table finishes and a playoff semi-final, Salford finished 20th last season and the 15-year ambition to reach the Championship by 2029 seems more fantastical than when Gary Neville announced it.

» Four Women’s Championship clubs to trial letting fans drink alcohol in stands
  • Drinking in view of pitch banned in top five men’s leagues
  • If trial works it may lead to wider rollout in women’s game

The Women’s Championship clubs Birmingham, Bristol City, Newcastle and Southampton will take part in a trial permitting fans to drink alcohol in the stands while watching games. It will start this month and run until the end of this season but apply to league fixtures only.

Drinking alcohol in view of the pitch is banned in the top five men’s leagues in English football, in accordance with the Sporting Events Act of 1985, but it is understood the women’s game is not tied to that legislation and therefore government approval is not required. If the trial is successful then, after further consultation, the concept could be rolled out more widely across the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship.

» Dyche dismissal is a risk that puts Everton’s need to stay up in sharp focus | Jonathan Wilson

Manager’s sacking is no shock given his dour football but successor has a perilous task. Could Moyes be the right fit?

It was life, but was it living? Everton have lost only four of their past 16 games in all competitions. They have kept five clean sheets in their past eight games and in the past month have frustrated Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. They’ve taken 17 points from 19 games this season, which the past decade of the Premier League would suggest, if repeated in the second half of the season, would leave them right on the edge of relegation.

Given the trend is for the relegated three to get fewer and fewer points, the sense is that, even with Wolves and Ipswich showing signs of improvement, they would probably have survived if Sean Dyche had stayed.

» Ange Postecoglou’s lone crusade to save sanctity of English football

Tottenham manager is wondering why nobody else is standing up to increasing role of technology in game

In Ange Postecoglou’s words, uttered a few weeks back, he is not the Messiah, just a “naughty little boy”. It was actually not his own work, rather a riff on the famous line from Monty Python’s Life of Brian but the point was well made.

Despite his commitment to doing things differently on the tactical front, to providing exhilaration, even escapism, the Tottenham manager does not want to put himself on a higher plane; to be preachy, holier than thou.

» Why Manchester City are looking to go big and sign Omar Marmoush

The versatile Egyptian forward has scored 18 goals and laid on 11 assists for Eintracht Frankfurt this season

By Ben McAleer for WhoScored

Manchester City fans are breathing a sigh of relief after back-to-back league wins. A run of one victory and nine defeats in 13 games was cause for concern for the defending champions, but they ended 2024 with a win at Leicester and kicked off 2025 with a home victory over West Ham. New year, new City.

Even in those victories, City do not look like the team they were. Leicester, who have lost their last five games, enjoyed a greater share of possession and West Ham, though they ended up losing 4-1, had 17 shots to City’s 10. If Pep Guardiola has the chance to bolster his squad in January, he should take it.

» Charlton’s Miles Leaburn: ‘People were saying I was only there because of my dad’

Forward’s father was a club hero and his mother looks after the squad but 6ft 7in youngster is thriving on his own merit

There is rarely a quiet evening in the Leaburn household, especially if Tracey is cooking jerk chicken. “She’s like a mother to everyone – I’m pretty sure some of the lads call her mum,” Miles Leaburn says with a laugh.

The Charlton forward is reflecting on his family’s unique position at the club. His father, Carl, played almost 400 games for them and remains a cult hero. Tracey, his mother, has been the head of first-team player care for a decade, and a couple of hours at the training ground in south-east London illustrate that she is the heartbeat of the League One club, who travel to the Championship side Preston in the FA Cup on Saturday.

» How the tell-nothing sport documentary craze failed its viewers

Wayne Rooney’s exit was a reminder of how common the fly-on-the-wall club documentary has become. The age of perpetual content is upon us, and it is viciously uninteresting

Won’t someone think of the streaming platforms? Wayne Rooney’s departure from Plymouth Argyle, after seven months and a winless run that left the club bottom of the Championship, not only suggests the former England star’s managerial career has reached its end – it’s also a signal of how contentious the fly-on-the-wall documentary has become in modern football. Rooney was the driving force behind Plymouth’s announcement last November that it would produce a behind-the-scenes documentary about the club’s battle to stay in the Championship. This was a scheme cooked up in the fires of the post-Welcome to Wrexham content jamboree, which has made seemingly every sub-top flight club across England eager to spin its struggles to stay afloat – amid deindustrialization, post-Brexit economic malaise, the stresses and joys of small-city life, and the slog of the English Football League – into streaming gold. The plan was to sell the finished product to a streaming service like Amazon or Netflix, thereby boosting the club’s coffers and stamping Plymouth Argyle on the cultural map with a force that games away to Preston and Oxford United alone can’t quite muster. Now, however, the plan is dead: with Rooney dispatched, the club has scrapped the documentary, which it feared could become a distraction as the team fights relegation. Neither decision has been lamented by the club’s fans, who never warmed to Rooney and reviled the idea of the documentary from its inception.

Plymouth’s abandonment of this sweaty content “play” points, perhaps, to a broader indecision among professional teams across Europe about the benefits of flinging open the training ground gates to the corporate documentarian’s camera. Amazon’s All or Nothing is the series most emblematic of the modern soccer club’s need to “tell its story”, but it appears to have lost much of the momentum it had a few years ago, after the success of its seasons featuring Tottenham and Arsenal. This may have something to do with the overwhelmingly negative perception of these documentaries among players: former Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, for instance, was withering about the Amazon series in his recent autobiography, describing it as a muzzle on the players’ freedom of speech and movement (“We had to be careful all the time,” he wrote). It may also be the product of simple cost-benefit analysis: Spurs and Arsenal each reportedly hauled in around £10m for their respective stints on the All or Nothing merry go round, and while that sum is nothing to be sneezed at (it’s good enough for a decent back-up defender, say, or an under-the-radar prospect from the lower reaches of Ligue 1), it’s perhaps not quite enough to justify the disruptions and reputational risks involved.

» Mallorca’s Cyle Larin: ‘Some players dive with the pressure but I like it’

Club’s top scorer has his sights set on the Spanish Super Cup but harbours ambitions of playing in the Premier League

“Pair of extra socks, pair of extra boxers”, and that, Cyle Larin says, is pretty much that. Well, it is normally. This time, it is a little different. There is a smile and Real Mallorca’s top scorer this season, Canada’s top scorer of all time, says: “Win that first game and you got to stay longer.”

More boxers, more socks, maybe more history too. Win that first game, Thursday night’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final, and they will still be there on Sunday night, 5,000km from home and 90 minutes from the third trophy in their 108 years.

The Manchester City midfielder becomes the sixth player to top our ranking of the world’s best 100 male footballers

One of the worst things about seeing Rodri in agony on the pitch against Arsenal in September – and the subsequent news that he had ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament – was that in the buildup to the injury he had criticised the workload being put on players. It was as if he knew something bad was about to happen.

In April, after an epic 3-3 draw at Real Madrid the Manchester City and Spain midfielder said: “I do need a rest.” He added: “Let’s see how we speak, how we live the situation. Sometimes it is what it is. I need to adjust. It [rest] is something we are planning, yes.”

» Sérgio Conceição sees instant impact in Milan’s Supercoppa derby triumph

New Rossoneri coach is regarded as a hard, emotionless taskmaster but Monday’s win prompted cigars and hugs

Sérgio Conceição warned us on Friday that “I don’t like to give out hugs”, but sometimes a moment gets the better of you. In Milan’s changing room on Monday night he danced, smoked a cigar and, yes, gave Théo Hernández a squeeze on camera. If ever there was a time to break character, it might be after winning your first trophy with the club you took charge of a week ago.

Has there ever been a footballing speed-run like this one? Hired to replace Paulo Fonseca as Milan’s manager – a transition so poorly handled that his predecessor wound up announcing his own sacking from a car window – Conceição led his first training session last Monday and flew with his new team to Riyadh a day later. Since then, he has produced come-from-behind wins over Juventus and Inter, delivering Milan their first silverware in three years.

Despite another nip-and-tuck match against Paris Saint-Germain – much like their meeting in Ligue 1 three weeks ago – Monaco were cruelly felled at the death in the Trophée des Champions. Ousmane Dembélé scored the only goal of the game in the 92nd minute, finally beating Monaco’s second-choice goalkeeper Philipp Köhn, who put in a fantastic display. The real star of the show though – as has been the case all season – was Monaco manager Adi Hütter.

Given his goalkeeper’s strong performance, and the fact his side missed out on what would have been their first trophy since they won the league in 2017, it may sound strange to pick out the manager for praise, but Monaco would be nowhere near PSG’s level without the Austrian. It’s an opinion shared by the club’s hierarchy, who extended his contract this weekend, no small matter given the number of managers they have churned through since Leonardo Jardim left in 2018. From Thierry Henry, to Jardim’s return, to Robert Moreno, to Niko Kovac and Philippe Clement, the club have lacked stability (and defensive solidity) for nearly a decade.

» Pellegrini rewards Ranieri’s call with starring role in Derby della Capitale | Nicky Bandini

The midfielder has been linked with a move away from boyhood club Roma but answered his critics against Lazio

Claudio Ranieri does not have all the answers. It can seem as if he does: the man who steered Leicester to a Premier League title and who long before that built a reputation in Italy as the first person to call when a top team was failing. In case of emergency, do not break the glass, just dial Claudio instead.

He had retired after leading Cagliari to an improbable escape from relegation last season, but Roma lured him back. The club – his club, the one he grew up supporting – was in shambles: 12th in the table despite an almost €100m summer transfer splurge and now seeking a third manager of this season. How could he say no, even at 73 years old, to his first footballing love?

» Mikel Oyarzabal: ‘Not going to the World Cup made me win the Euros’

Euro 2024 champion reflects on sealing Spain’s triumph and how a team without big names were stronger together

After breakfast on the morning of the Euro 2024 final, a small group of players stayed in the dining room on the first floor of Spain’s hotel on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz and talked. They had sat together most days over the five weeks spent at their Der Öschberghof HQ outside Donaueschingen and all round Germany, from Gelsenkirchen to Düsseldorf, Cologne to Stuttgart and Munich, a bunch of friends chatting about everything and nothing, but 14 July wasn’t most days. Back in Berlin where it had all begun, this was the last. It was also the best day of Mikel Oyarzabal’s life and theirs, too. And somehow they knew.

“There was some feeling inside,” Oyarzabal recalls five months on, strolling across the pitch at Zubieta, Real Sociedad’s training ground, and into the warmth of a small office. “Álvaro Morata says I’m going to score. Álex Remiro too. And that morning the five of us from la Real were sitting at the table: Remi, [Mikel] Merino, Zubi [Martín Zubimendi], Robin [Le Normand] and me. We would always hang about after eating and chat. I’d been saying it for a while and I said it then: one of us was going to be important, we would have our moment.”

» Atalanta show their mettle at Lazio to keep in-form Inter off Serie A summit
  • Marco Brescianini scores in 88th minute to earn 1-1 draw
  • Martínez ends drought in Inter’s 3-0 win at Cagliari

Atalanta’s 11-match winning streak in Serie A ended with a 1-1 draw at Lazio, but Marco Brescianini’s 88th-minute equaliser kept them top of the table.

Fourth-placed Lazio dominated the first half in Rome and were rewarded in the 27th minute when Nicolò Rovella played a high through ball to Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who cut inside the box and sent a bouncing volley into the net to break. But Gian Piero Gasperini’s relentless side kept pushing and earned a draw in a thrilling finish to the game.

» Barcelona hope to finally register Dani Olmo after agreeing VIP seating deal
  • Sale of boxes at Camp Nou likely to secure player’s future
  • Barça had to find way to comply with FFP by 31 December

FC Barcelona have reportedly closed a last-minute €100m (£82.9m) deal to sell VIP boxes at the newly renovated Camp Nou to Middle Eastern investors. The club are hopeful the sale will allow them to meet financial fair play rules and finally extend Dani Olmo’s registration.

With the deadline for registration just three days away and Barcelona facing the prospect of Olmo leaving as a free agent just six months after joining on a €55m (£45.6m) transfer, the club president Joan Laporta exercised a sale option on Saturday which the club believe will see the first payment made before 31 December.

» Enjoy the pain, never tire of the beauty: some advice for football fans in 2025 | Max Rushden

Whoever you support it’s a long year ahead, but here’s a few tips from one of many who should be old enough to know better

Chances are none of you have spent time looking back on my 2024 attempts to produce a column alongside esteemed journalists who actually write for a living. But through the various subjects, from set-piece coaches to VAR, from the dark arts to PSR, the one consistent theme appears to be a fortnightly mid-life crisis published straight on to your Guardian app.

Perhaps the opportunity to stare at a blank document on a laptop while contemplating life once every other week has staved off other more visceral cliches; skinny three-quarter-length jeans, a moustache, a motorbike seem some way off.

» Football transfer rumours: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia heading for Liverpool?

Today’s fluff comes sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines

Liverpool like the look of Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and are trying to hijack the winger’s proposed move to Paris St-Germain, with their offer potentially helped by the Italian club’s apparent interest in Anfield benchwarmer Federico Chiesa, though the Georgian “also features on the list of potential targets for teams like Chelsea”, claim the Athletic, who also add, less promisingly, that “Liverpool are not specifically chasing a player of Kvaratskhelia’s profile”.

On his way to Napoli, meanwhile, is Bournemouth’s Philip Billing, initially on loan but with a view to the deal becoming permanent for £9m come the summer. Conversely, on his way to Bournemouth is the 29-year-old Paraguay striker Alex Arce, who is apparently wanted on loan, again with the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season, from the Ecuadorian champions, Liga Deportiva Universitaria.

» Tyra Mills: ‘My football videos got a lot of views … hate and bullying comes with it’

Former Tottenham Under-23s player has been open about her battles and is determined not to let the trolls win

Tyra Mills is in reflective mood. She may only be 24 years old but it feels as if she has been on a journey already that some may not experience in a lifetime.

Mills is a multitalented content creator and rose to popularity when she started posting videos of football tricks, skills and crossbar challenges during lockdown. At the time she was playing for Tottenham Under-23s but had also started to put on weight and in the end did not feel comfortable continuing. Cyberbullying didn’t help: she became a target as soon as her first football video went viral.

» Which football teams have won the league without a shirt sponsor? | The Knowledge

Plus: non-football athletes wearing football crests on their kit; and teams who were sponsored by news organisations

  • Mail us any of your questions and answers

“Chelsea are firmly in the title race despite what their manager says,” wrote Will Nichols before Christmas. “But who was the last team to win the English top flight without a shirt sponsor? Has it been done more recently in another country?”

Chelsea’s conscious uncoupling from the title race doesn’t change the fact that this is a cracking question. Let’s start with the English top flight. Knowledge regular Dirk Maas has trawled the brilliant True Colours website – which, if you are the type of person who reads this column, is likely to be an endless source of serotonin – to find the answer: Aston Villa in 1980-81. Not content with using only 14 players (if you’re under the age of about 40, let that sink in) all season, they didn’t have a shirt sponsor either.

» The Guardian Footballer of the Year Sofie Junge Pedersen: ‘We wanted to send a message’

The Inter and Denmark player wins the award for her climate activism and being behind an open letter to Fifa regarding Saudi Arabia’s human rights issues

The Guardian Footballer of the Year is an award given to a player who has done something remarkable, whether by overcoming adversity, helping others or setting a sporting example by acting with exceptional honesty.

If the football had not worked out, perhaps Sofie Junge Pedersen could have run away to the circus. When her after-school youth club in Aarhus put on its annual week of performances there was one challenge that struck her in particular: the chance to juggle with fire torches and mock knives. “It was quite serious,” she laughs. “We practised a lot beforehand and I thought it would be fun. I just wanted to be the best.” So it proved and there is no evidence that anyone has beaten the time she set, aged 13, for keeping the two airborne simultaneously.

» Age of tactical ideologues is over as Spain dominates new era of pragmatism | Jonathan Wilson

Coaches such as Arteta, Iraola and Emery play variations of the Guardiola model – flexibility and adaptability are in vogue

Spain are the European champions. Real Madrid won the Champions League. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or and has only come to seem more important since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Spanish managers won the Premier League, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 last season. No fewer than five Premier League clubs are managed by Spaniards.

It has been another year of Spanish domination but the manager who more than anybody has been the architect of what is now considered the Spanish style is facing the biggest crisis of his career.

» Proposals, tears and flying pies: my life behind the bar on football’s concourses | Honor Pullman

From the Den to Old Trafford, via Craven Cottage and the Emirates, I saw it all during my years pulling pints for fans

I was 17 when I started working at football grounds for some extra cash on the weekends. As the youngest of three girls, I could easily have followed my older sisters into a Saturday job at a local cafe. Instead, I signed away my life (and social life) to a hospitality agency, in exchange for a tenner an hour, flexible shifts and a variety of unflattering uniforms.

As a diehard Hull City fan, I was no stranger to the concourse, but I wasn’t prepared for the trials and tribulations of working in them. From Millwall to Manchester, I’ve seen it all – proposals, tears (mainly my own) and flying pies.

» Which Thomas Tuchel will turn up on his first day as England manager?

The coach is faced with the difficult task of preserving Gareth Southgate’s legacy of unity while also turning the team into one that can end a 60-year trophy drought

Volker Kersting, Mainz academy director, sighed. Thomas Tuchel, as of Wednesday England’s new manager, had that look in his eyes. “He just said, ‘Volker’ and I knew what was coming,” Kersting said in Rulebreaker, the Tuchel biography by Daniel Meuren and Tobias Schächter. “I’d been dreading it. He really wanted to go up the mountain and dig up that pin.”

“The pin” was a grubby, small Mainz badge which during a summer pre-season training trip in Austria for Tuchel’s then Mainz under-19s team had assumed almost sanctified status. Alongside four-hour training sessions – something of a shock for teenagers – Tuchel also displayed the gift for team bonding that he will require for the England job. One day in Austria, Tuchel insisted the whole squad hire mountain bikes and ride to the summit of the Simmering mountain, where they had lunch and admired the beautiful views before the head coach demonstrated his rhetorical powers, using the moment to tell the team that their goal was to win the league, something never achieved previously by Mainz’s youngsters. Tuchel wanted a ceremony to mark the covenant between team and coach so made do with Kersting’s Mainz badge, which was solemnly wrapped in a Snickers wrapper and buried at the mountain top. “When we reach our final, we will return to dig up our treasure!” Tuchel told them.
